Mitigating nutrient losses with lemna

13/02/2024

The pilot system that integrates Lemna, an aquatic plant, into a farm’s water purification system aims to evaluate two things:

  • can it help valorize residual effluents into reclaimed water of sufficient quality
  • can it generate plant biomass that could serve as a green manure or nutrient source for feed production.

This measure represents an innovative strategy for mitigating nutrient losses in agrosystems, offering promising avenues for improving livestock waste management.

Such applications remain largely unexplored, despite the fact that there is clearly a growing need to improve waste management through technologies that facilitates its valorization into value-added products.

This initiative is one of the five mitigation measures that are being tested in the Spanish pilot, as part of the NutriBudget project.
